Genetically Modify Foods?--No We Should Not

Although there are many benefits from GE foods, there are many critics and much debate why genetically engineered foods should be labeled and should not be consumed.

  • Long-term effects are unknown. Research and study regarding gene transfer and long-term health risks of consuming foods on a daily basis containing GMOs is still unknown. Whether or not genetically modified foods are safe for us in the long run is still not proven. Also, GE foods playing a role in cancer have yet to be disproved.
  • GM foods contain higher levels of toxins and allergens. When foods are altered via biotechnology and undergo manipulation, they will have a different molecular form than the natural version. For this reason, many people can form allergies to the altered form despite not having allergies when consuming the whole-organic form. Also, as more GMOs are ingested, the toxicity in the body rises.
  • As easily as certain nutrients and vitamins can be introduced into GE foods, naturally made and natural found nutrition can be lost when GMOs are inserted into the equation.
  • GE foods carry an unstable ecosystem. Acres of land are needed to produce and grow GE crops leading to a rise in deforestation. Also, due to the natural environment, when crossbreeding between GE crops and whole-organic crops occurs, a new breed is formed that is antibiotic resistant. This is very dangerous and costly because more pesticides will be needed for crops.

Do you think the above reasons are enough to avoid consuming GE foods?

  1. I certainly agree that GE foods are not perfect yet. As a consumer, I am really worried about their possible long-term effects and allergens. And if GE foods don't have any differences of nutrients and vitamins but cause unstable ecosystem, I think there really aren't reasons to buy GE foods rather than normal foods. However, these points are not proved yet, and GE foods also have other benefits. Thus, organizations and governments need to pay more attention to find out more facts related to GE foods and make sure they are healthy.
